Progress station was opened as a geological and geophysical research field base, and, in 2012, a new wintering building began was opened there. At the present time, Progress is the ‘capital’ of the Russian Antarctic Expedition.
Progress is the base for inland transport operations of the Russian Antarctic Expedition. It is from the Progress station, during the summer season tractor train traverses trips and airplanes deliver employees, fuel, cargo and food to Vostok station.
RESEARCH
During the summer season, research in biology, hydrobiology, limnology, glaciology and geomorphology is carried out at the station. The station receives satellite data on the sea ice cover state.
The year-round scientific program at the station includes observations and research in oceanology, hydrology, meteorology, magnetospheric and ionospheric observations.
