Mirny is the first Soviet (Russian) station in Antarctica. From the date of its foundation, the counting of regular Russian research in Antarctica begins. For the first winter in Antarctica, 86 people remained at the station, led by Mikhail Somov, the Head of the station.
RESEARCH
The year-round research and observation program includes aerology, meteorology, oceanology, biology, ozonometric observations, magnetospheric and ionospheric observations. The station receives satellite data on the state of sea ice.
